Keys that cannot be copied without identification must be unique to be patented. This provides protection to the original manufacturer against other companies copying their key blanks. The patent gives the manufacturer control on who they sell to and the rules they establish in their contracts for identifying the owners of high security keys.

High Security Locks also must be unique to be patented. In addition to using the restricted keys the locks have special pins, locking design and inserts to thwart picking, bumping, drilling and kicking. A high security deadbolt, properly installed, is a great deterent to thieves.
